A Hearty Welcome, Darned Nice To Be Here!

Hello, Menstuff and Scavengers alike! I just began another adventure, this time joining the staff of Menstuff and I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself properly. I am WHC Riler and my background is uncovering freebies & great sale items around the grid and blogging them to share. Actually, my life is like Indiana Jones' but without having to leave the comfort of my chair. I am a ninja when it comes to doing store hunts and I bring to Menstuff my own, rather peculiar, skill set (along with the gold medal I won at the 2003 Slacker Olympics!). The last few years of my SL have been my best, most satisfying ever. Now, I can't wait to bring all of you with me on my upcoming adventures. Get ready, together we are going to have a blast!-----WHC Riler

Oh Carami!

whc subway final 1

In my first life, I am a T-shirt and jeans kind of guy. There are a lot of us out there and this FREE Thank You Gift from Carami is perfect for us. It is the Trenton Tee and it comes in a set of five solid dark colors, changeable via hud. This is far more than just a basic mesh T-shirt, this FREE Gift is much more generous than that. The Trenton Tee comes in four variations; tucked, untucked, normal bottom untucked, and narrow bottom untucked. With choices like that and in five sizes, getting a great fit should not be hard at all. It comes with a sixth bonus texture that isn't on the hud. That bonus texture is the one I am wearing above, a very casual retro looking print T-shirt. Just take care to make a backup copy of the print tee, because once you change it using the hud, it is replaced with the color you chose. In short, FREE Gift from Carami is giving you a great basic dark T-shirt in five colors and sizes and in 4 variations plus a bonus printed T-shirt design! You can't beat this kind of a thank you gift, thank you very much FREE Gift from Carami!

The skin I am wearing is from Seven Deadly Skins. It is the free group gift for May and looks fantastic, I like it so much you will probably be seeing me in it often in the coming weeks. Seven Deadly Skins is a pay group, but the quality of their skins is excellent and the gifts and specials make it well worth joining. As of this moment the group is currently on sale for 50L and is a great pick up for both male and female avies.

One last thing in this entry to talk about, I am wearing a fantastic set of eyes from Poetic Colors. The Spotted Eyes in Tropic are a FREE Gift and are very well done. They are multi-colored and really should be seen to appreciate how great they look. On my avy in varying windlight settings, they appear somewhere between a lavender and light gray, but have some aqua and blue in them, you really should take a look yourself, they are pretty special. While at Poetic Colors also join the subscribo and you will receive another FREE Gift, the Pearl Eyes in Clear Pond. It is definitely worth the trip if you have not gone yet. Until next time everyone, have fun and see you on the grid. -----WHC Riler

Happy Valentine's Day!

"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength,
while loving someone deeply gives you courage."
- Lao Tzu

In the United States, today is Valentines Day. I tried to research this extensively so I could add some insight into the origin and cultural significance of this holiday, but after reading the Wiki, I said to heck with that and decided to just make stuff up. There is some uncertainty about the origin of the Valentine for which this holiday is named. I think the most likely historical figure was an inventor in the early 1400's who gained some notoriety for developing a new lightweight, easily configurable kind of armor for which late in life he was made a Patron Saint. Not surprisingly, the age of cardboard armor was quite fleeting as it offered little protection from swords, arrows, rain and even candles. To this day however, we honor Saint Valentine the Patron Saint of Dubious Armor by sending messages to our loved ones on thin pieces of decorated cardboard. In the United States our modern Valentines Day tradition began in 1912 when the President signed the great holiday compromise bill into law. Frustration American women felt when earlier in the month they were traditionally given groundhogs as tokens of their lover's affection had finally boiled over and the government was forced to intervene. As the result, Valentines Day was created for gift giving, and the groundhog, once nearly as popular as the Chihuahua in American households, fell in stature to it's current position, slightly more popular than a television weather man. LAVAROCK has once again made it's way onto my blog with their FREE group gift, a black very nicely textured casual shirt which buttons up the front. It has a leathery texture and is emblazoned in back with a dark gray tribal heart design that is tastefully done. As always with a Lavarock gift you get great texturing and detailing including stitching and realistic metallic buttons. A note to some of my more conservative friends, the buttons do have tiny non-inverted pentagrams on them in case it matters. It's a very nice shirt and the perfect excuse for me to pop on and wish everyone a happy Valentines Day. Take care and spread some love on the grid today.-----WHC Riler

Post-Apocolyptic Dream Date!

Our next guest stays eternally young by prowling the desert wasteland, picking up scrap metal and killing mutants for their fuel credits. He likes long drives in the desert and skinning and cooking rabbits for food. Please give a warm post-apocalyptic welcome to Riot Bayn!!!! Yes ladies, after the nuclear holocaust, after the global war against the undead, even after the mutant uprising that follows, you might still have to date someone. Riot and the remaining horde of mildly-mutated survivors are counting on that. It should come as no surprise to anyone that he already has picked out his clothes for that future event. The rugged-looking MESH vest Riot is wearing is the Menstuff Hunt gift from BROCADE TIGER. It has a fantastic masculine look, and the back is emblazoned with a pair of angel wings, which evoke a vest worn by my favorite character on a great television show. I won't say which one, but a friend once called it a "Soap opera with zombies". I MUTED HER! As worn in the pics, the jacket has been tinted a darker brown, something easily done if needed. I love the look of this vest.

Riot is wearing the Winter Kat Jeans from the Menstuff Hunt gift from NEKOLICIOUS and straight out of the box they are gray but can be tinted as shown here to match other garments. The Winter Kat outfit consists of a bright red MESH holiday sweater, the MESH Winter Kat Jeans (which would be great for most male wardrobes), and a set of animated ears and a tail to complete the neko theme. VESTIGIUM'S Menstuff Hunt prize "Bruises III" contributes the scratches and roughens up Riot's face some, which gives him a very authentic tough-guy look to match his nearly-authentic tough guy attitude. His shirt is a very nicely textured brown long sleeve Henley shirt which is a FREE Christmas Gift from ASHBURY. It looks great whether you choose to wear it alone, or under another item of clothing like a mesh jacket. I own a number of mesh jackets, so an excellent system shirt (layer style clothing) is especially valuable to me. It is available until the end of the month and is a MUST pick up since it can be worn with such versatility.

Riot's ride comes courtesy of SURPLUS MOTORS, and was not free. However, now is the perfect time to mention that both Surplus Motors and KNIGHT PERFORMANCE make fantastic cars, some of which are free group gifts. The level of care and detail in the creation of these cars is evident in the pics. So, even if you can't get tickets to appear on a future episode of Post-Apocalyptic Dream Date, you can look like you belong on the show: rugged, handsome, and able to take care of yourself in a world of unimaginable violence and brutality. You can have that look and still have enough money left over to buy that issue of the National Enquirer you saw at the fuel depot. Oh look! President Kardashian is posing nude again to get the budget through Congress. I always knew she would make a great President.-----WHC Riler

Websurfin' Safari

It is great to be back home! My safari vacation went smoothly but first off, for educational purposes, let me make an important statement. When someone tells you something is "endangered" often they are grossly exaggerating. Lets just say I am no great hunter but at no point did I ever feel in danger at all. The really big elephants are impressive and could pose a real threat to someone, but if you stick with the small ones you can hunt safely. I am kidding of course, I did not kill a baby elephant. I bought it off the back of a truck at the safari camp. Before anyone gets upset, I made sure to ask the driver about the elephant and was assured it was not a wild elephant but it was raised at a "domestical breedery" for use in the "National Economic Treasury Program". I really didn't believe him, so I refused to buy the matching lamps. Sometimes a man just has to take a stand and do the right thing. All of this leads me to the Around The Grid In 80 Days 2 Hunt. This hoodie I am wearing is the Around The World Hoodie hunt prize from SHORT CIRCUIT and only cost 1L. It is perfect for the global traveler in you, is mesh and has the T-shirt with the map texture integrated into it. In the outfit I made for myself below I actually tinted it slightly to darken it, something that is optional and no trouble at all. The pants are a FREE gift from SF DESIGNS, the grey chinos are available for a very limited time at Creations Park. They are actually grey straight out of the box so a little tinting was in order to get it to look great with the hoodie, but grab these while you can, they are FREE, look great and are very versatile. The Elephant Coffee Table & Rug from POTPOURRI DESIGNS are another great gift from the hunt and is 1L. All kidding aside, they look fantastic and are a great pick up if you ever want to have a safari themed room or such. These are all great bargains.-----WHC Riler

Other items from inventory (Skin-Egoisme, Hair-MADesigns Hair, Eyes-Poetic Colors)

(Blogmonkey's note - I intended this blog to help new residents as well as to serve hunters and bargain seekers, so please forgive me for taking a quick moment regarding tinting. Sometimes when you pick things up they are mod, and tinting will be an option. Whenever possible, make a copy of the garment and work on the copy instead of the original. That's actually great advice when making any changes on Second Life, no matter what you are doing. For the hoodie I decided to tint it slightly more beige to cover a tiny bit of white on the bottom of the tee. honestly, it is really only necessary if you are a perfectionist like me. I use the firestorm viewer to access Second Life but other viewers should be similar. First put on the hoodie and notice in the inventory screen when you choose it, it does say no modify. That's fine it can still be tinted. Wearing it, right click on it and choose edit to bring up the edit window. Under the texture tab is a white square, that's because it has not been tinted yet and it's default setting is white. Click the box under the word color and choose your tint, its always best to be as subtle as possible, over tinting does not look very good at all using restraint is best. Please make sure not to choose the full bright or any other option in this tab, that's outside of the scope of this post, perhaps topics for another day. Close the edit window and check your work. The SF Design pants are grey straight out of the box but I thought they would look great with the hoodie. They are mod on the pants layer and are edited normally just like other clothing. I like keeping things simple so I tinted them just enough to look good with the hoodie and adjusted the length and such to fit over my shoes better. I didn't need to bother with the leg prims this time to do what I wanted so I left them out of the finished outfit. That's it really, most times I wear things I don't make changes like I did this time but the outfit looks fantastic and hopefully I am helping to encourage newer residents to think about what they can do with what they get rather then just accept items purely at their face value. Second Life allows you a great deal of control over things if you choose to use it, and it can be a very creative experience in many unexpected ways. Thank you for reading this, see you on the grid.-----WHC Riler
